Creative Brief

Designing a main title sequence for Barry Jenkins’ Oscar-winning film Moonlight.

Concept

In the movie, the main character, Chiron, grows up in a broken family and hostile environment, facing sexual prejudices that force him to internalize his sexuality and trauma—an inner struggle that will always remain a part of him. This is symbolically reflected in the title sequence, where a white lily, representing Chiron’s innocence, is gradually contaminated by a blood-like, turbulent liquid, illustrating the external forces that shape his development.

Highlights

This project was my first opportunity to gain hands-on experience with a DSLR camera.

Story

The sequence begins with a drop of blood-like liquid landing on a pristine white lily petal—something seemingly pure and untouched. As the liquid seeps deeper into the flower, it gradually transforms its appearance.

Process

I arranged a vase of white lilies against a black background with direct lighting. After planning a visual roadmap and selecting the appropriate photos, I composited the blood-like liquid into the frames.

I used this learning opportunity to familiarize myself with a DSLR camera, Adobe Lightroom, photo compositing, and experimenting with unique typography treatments.
